Alan Cienki and colleagues have been awarded a grant from the Russian Science Foundation/RNF (16 million rubles = over 267,000 euros) for the project “Verbal and co-verbal means of event construal across languages”. It will run from May 2017 to December 2018 at the Multimodal Communication and Cognition Lab at Moscow State Linguistic University, which Alan directs on a part-time secondment from the VU.
The grant will allow for a follow-up to the initial project on this topic funded by the RNF in 2014-16. The research involves teams from France, Germany, and Russia in a cross-linguistic investigation of the use of verb tense and aspect forms in spoken French, German, and Russian in relation to the movement qualities of speakers’ gestures. This was the starting point for the thesis project of Valeriia Denisova, who is completing a double PhD with MSLU and the VU. The follow-up project will involve use of the new Perception Neuron motion capture system, implementing it specifically for research on gesture with speech.
